The Tierra Alta Vineyard was planted by our friend and grower, John Belfy, back in 2000. Located in Ballard Canyon (just west of Los Olivos), it’s the steepest vineyard in the area, and is composed of limestone-rich soil. The combination of limestone and elevation makes for perfect drainage and offers ideal heating and cooling conditions for the vines. Syrah thrives under such conditions, and Tierra Alta is known for its deep, dark, intense wines.
To complement the characteristics of the grapes, the wine was aged for 19 months in older, neutral French oak barrels. It is long and luscious, worthy of stashing a few bottles away in the cellar for a few years to see how it changes.
Syrah is a very versatile Rhone varietal, generally having a medium to heavy body, branded with blackberry tones. Depending on the area it is grown, it can also have pepper flavors, making it an excellent compliment to grilled steak.
Tierra Alta Vineyard sits at very high elevation in the Santa Ynez valley. This elevation provides great exposure to the long days of sunshine we have here in Santa Ynez.
